You are about to be shown a series of online conversations taken from a Reddit debate forum. In SOME of these conversations, the debate got heated and out of hand, resulting in a comment that was removed by moderators for violating the forum’s rules against “rude or hostile” behavior. For ease of reference, we’ll refer to conversations with a removed comment as “awry” and all other conversations as “non-awry”. You are not told ahead of time which is which, in fact you will have to guess that!
For each conversation, you will start by seeing the first comment and have the option to reveal subsequent comments one at a time. At each comment, your task is to make your best guess about how the conversation will end. After making a guess, you still have the opportunity to change it until the last comment is revealed. Incorrect guesses are penalized. If you are uncertain, you can choose to reveal the next comment before guessing, but this will also incur a (smaller) penalty. Be careful: The final guess before revealing the last comment is the most heavily weighed.
Scoring guide:
- Reveal next comment: -1
- Incorrect guess: -2
- Incorrect final guess: -5
- Reveal final comment without ever guessing: -5
On the next page you will be presented with the first comment in an online conversation.
You can guess whether or not the conversation will lead to a personal attack, which will earn you all possible points for that question if you are right and 0 if you are wrong.
If you are not confident enough to guess, you can reveal the next comment in the conversation, which will cost you some possible points but give you another chance to guess.
If you reveal the last comment in the conversation, you earn 0 points.

For each conversation, you will start by seeing the first comment and have the option to reveal subsequent comments one at a time. Your task is to try to reach the end of all non-awry conversations (i.e. reveal all comments in the conversation). But be careful: if the conversation turns out to be an awry one, and you end up revealing a removed comment, you’ll lose points! To avoid losing points, if you suspect that a conversation is going awry, you can choose to mark it as “awry” early.
To sum it up:
You will receive points when you reach the end of a non-awry conversation AND for when you correctly mark a conversation as awry before you reach the removed comment 💣.
You will lose points if you incorrectly mark a non-awry conversation as awry, or if you reveal the rude comment.
CONTENT WARNING: Some conversations may contain toxic and offensive language.
